Once a month, The Edge of the Forest talks to a group
of kids about their favorite books.
This month, Jone Rush MacCulloch, aka MsMac of Check It Out, talks to
fourth and fifth graders at Silver Star School in Vancouver, Washington. Jone Rush MacCulloch is a teacher librarian at
Silver Star School and loves to discuss books with her students. Kicking off the new school year, Ms. MacCulloch asked her
students two questions: “What book would you like to live in?” and “What character would you like to have lunch with?”
Aaron, 9, would like to live in The Call of the Wild, by Jack London, because it is dangerous
and Buck saves two people.
Jennifer, 10, would have lunch with Violet Baudelaire, from A Series of Unfortunate Events,
by Lemony Snicket, because of her intelligence. She would like to know about more about
Violet’s inventions and hear stories about life with her brother, sister, and Count Olaf.
Kellan, 9, would take Roy, from the book Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen, to lunch. He thought Roy
was brave to stick up for the owls. He also thought that Roy was kind to Mullet Fingers in the
hospital.
Teanna, 9, would like to have lunch with Skippyjon Jones, by Judy Schachner. She loves that
he is cat who sometimes acts like a bird.
Bradley, 9, and Brendan, 9, want to live in any of the Deltora series books, by Emily Rodda.
Bradley hopes he can talk to the animals and meet all who have magical powers. Brendan
loves the adventures and surprises and hopes to fight evil by living there.
Tasha, 9, would have lunch with Dawn from the Babysitters Club series, written by Ann M.
Martin. She would take her to a vegetarian restaurant since they both do not eat meat.
Tasha wants to be a babysitter in training.
Melissa, 9, wants to meet Bertie, from Bertie was a Watchdog, by Rick Walton. She wants
to see his medal and see how he gets around because he is so small.
Xenia, 9, chose the classic, Peter Pan, as her new home. She wants to go to Neverland,
learn to fly with pixie dust and meet all the characters.
Shiann, 9, would dine with Katie Carew from the Katie Kazoo, Switcheroo series, by Nancy E. Krulik.
She hopes the magic wind might come and Katie is always happy. (Just like Shiann)
Mea, 9, thinks it would be interesting to live in the book Santa Paws, by Nicholas Edwards,
because she wants to be in the snow and help dogs.
Andrea, 10, would call Cam Jansen (Cam Jansen series, by David A. Adler) up for lunch. She thinks
her memory is like a camera. She says ”Click” when she wants to remember something and she
goes on mysteries.
Joseph, 10, would call Eragon, by Christopher Paolini, home if he could. He thinks the battles,
castles, and mythology are amazing. He hopes to meet the elves there.
Kobe, 10, would set a lunch date with Karana from Island of the Blue Dolphins. She would like
to meet her because she was brave in making the leader of the wild dog pack her dog and
displayed strength when her brother died. She also waited patiently for a ship that didn’t
return for eighteen years.
Sophia, 9, also chose a classic, The Magician’s Nephew, to live in. She loves all the animals,
and the sun is always up and the wind is just right.
And what about Ms. MacCulloch? Here's her answer: I would choose to live in The Star of Kazan, by Eva Ibbotsen. It
would be for a period of time because I have too many books that I like. I was intrigued by the setting of the book and
would love to see the world as it was before WWI.
