Teen Reader Edition
by Little Willow, Bildungsroman
The end of the school year is here. (At least, it is
for many traditional American schools.) Now that
classes and finals are over, students can tackle
"unassigned" reading. Here's a list of books that
these surveyed teens can't wait to read.
Grace S., 14: I Am America and So Can You! by Stephen Colbert
Sarah, 16: I am really excited for when I go to the library
tomorrow. I have Suite Scarlett, Wake, Austenland, and
Airhead. I know I have to choose which one to read, but
I know I can start the next book right afterwards. I
love summer. I am excited for Breaking Dawn and a few
other books that come out over the summer.

I also want to read Pride and Prejudice by Jane
Austen, but I'm just too darn busy now.
I can't wait to read Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in
the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer.

I can't wait to read Lord of the Silent, The Golden
One, Children of the Storm, The Serpent on the Crown,
and Tomb of the Golden Bird, all by Elizabeth Peters
(the amazing Amelia Peabody series), as well as The
Host and Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer, and I want
to finish reading the complete works of William
Shakespeare.

The Other Boleyn Girl by Philipa Gregory

Definitely the new Twilight book by Stephenie Meyer. I
can't wait. I can't believe it's almost been a year
since Eclipse came out, but yeah, definitely Breaking
Dawn—can't wait for it.
I've been busy with work, so I can't wait to get some
free time and finish the recent Maximum Ride book by
James Patterson.
Maggie K., 8th grade:
I'd have to say that my favorite books are by Tamora

Emporer Mage; 4) The Realms of the Gods.

Page; 3) Squire; 4) Lady Knight.
Trickster's Choice & Trickster's Queen
Beka Cooper: Terrier
Rachel, age unlisted:
Either Stephenie Meyer's The Host or the comic
novelization for Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.
Erin M., 17:
Here's what's on my to-read stack at the moment:
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis
Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery
The Diamond of Drury Lane by Julia Golding
The Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty, a
reread
Up and Down the Scratchy Mountains by Laurel Snyder
Madeleine W., 17:
A Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
A bunch of Jane Austen
White Oleander by Janet Fitch
Jake F., 16:
No novels. Japanese textbooks instead.
Laurie, a middle school librarian, has this to add:
I have seen more of my students carrying around their
own personal copies of The Host than I ever remember
seeing any book in students' hands (this signifies
that not only do they want to read it, they want to
OWN it, and they want to carry it around with them.)
Also popular lately (with a different but slightly
overlapping group as those reading The Host), the
Drama High series.
Additional input from me:
Breaking Dawn seems to be a favorite, not only among
those surveyed, but among my teen and female customers
in general.
Many of the surveyed teens asked me, "Is it okay to
list classics?" I told them a thousand times, yes!
As far as summer releases go, I'm most excited about
Poison
Ink by Christopher
Golden. I had the chance to read it early, and I
drank up every drop! Poison Ink is a YA novel/thriller
about five best friends who plan to get matching
tattoos, and what happens when one of them backs out—and the others start acting strangely after getting
inked. I can't wait to get this book into the hands of
readers when it comes out in July!
